What is Abstract Painting?

If you have been viewing a lot of paintings recently, you may only really appreciate a few of those that you have been able to see. The reason may be due to the fact that many different techniques and painting styles are used by different painters. Abstract painting is one of those styles. When abstract painting is brought up, many people may not appreciate it because it is so different, in style and appearance. Such painting style should not be judged at first sight because of its oddity. You must first understand why it was painted?

Abstract painting does not portray reality in the way traditional paintings do. Some paintings, depict a photographic expression of objects, people or a realistic image of something. Abstract paintings however, do not illustrate real objects and are a lot different in what they portray. Abstract paintings show colors and shapes that are non-representative and non-objective. Individuals, anything, or nothing may be represented by the painting. To understand the meaning of some paintings, you may need to ask an expert, or even the painter, if living, to interpret the meaning of a particular painting. Experts and natural art lovers will not need any explanations of what the paintings mean if they love this style of painting.

Take the time to really look at an abstract painting. All the colors you see will be bold, bright and vivid. You will also notice the painting is made up of biometric shapes. This strange and beautiful piece of work will be very appealing to the lover of this art style.

Back in the 1940′s, artists created a movement known as Abstract Expressionism. Artists and painters wanted a freedom of expression through the art they produced. So they wholeheartedly supported the abstract painting style, which made it more popular. The movement, which was also called Action Painting, began in a school in New York. American schools which joined the movement did so in declaring their independence from the European style of art. This in turn, pushed this style of painting forward.

To appreciate and understand abstract painting, it is important to understand its humble beginnings. Although abstract painting may seem very odd to some, it is important to understand and learn to love it. Many painters express their thoughts and feelings through these paintings and it is a part of history. These paintings can be found in art galleries and local art shops around the world. They come in a wide range of prices and you can find reproductions of the classic abstract paintings made famous by many great artists.
